Different Types of Sugar Substitutes

In today’s modern diet, sugar is infamously known as the most harmful ingredient. Added sugar is considered one of the root causes for several serious diseases such as chronic obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer. With sugar being the culprit of most dietary weaknesses, it sure can be quite difficult to avoid, as it mostly makes everything taste better. But a few tastefully sweet moments are not worth a lifetime of health risks. Fortunately, there are numerous ways to sweeten foods and beverages without the need for added sugar. Here are some sweeteners that make for much healthier options than sugar:

· Stevia – is a natural sweetener, scientifically known as Stevia Rebaudiana, which is extracted from the leaves of a South American shrub. Since this plant extract is non-caloric, it is safe to be used by diabetic patients and it won’t contribute to obesity. As a matter of fact, human studies have shown that stevia is not associated with any adverse health effects. It’s also much sweeter than sugar, so only less of it is needed to provide the same amount of sweetness. Another benefit for this is how it aids in lowering high blood pressure, on top of also lowering blood sugar and insulin levels.

· Xylitolis a sugar alcohol with the same level of sweetness as sugar itself. It comes from corn or birch wood and can be found in many fruits and vegetables. Although Xylitol contains 2.4 calories per gram, which is 40% fewer calories than sugar, it does not raise blood sugar or insulin levels. Xylitol does not contain any fructose and thus has none of the harmful effects associated with sugar. Xylitol also has multiple health benefits such as dental health improvement and an increase in the body’s calcium absorption. Xylitol is generally well-tolerated, but eating too much of it can cause digestive side effects like gas, bloating and diarrhoea.

· Coconut sugar is a natural sweetener that is unrefined, so it retains all of its vitamins and minerals. It does not cause fluctuations in blood sugar levels, but it contains the same amount of calories as sugar. Coconut sugar is extracted from the sap of the coconut palm. It contains nutrients such as iron, zinc, calcium, potassium, and antioxidants as well. It also has a lower glycemic index than sugar, which may be partly due to its inulin content.

· Honeyis also a natural sweetener that is a thick, golden liquid produced by honey bees. Its health benefits include anti-microbial, heart-healthy, and anti-inflammatory effects. The consumption of honey may help raise the levels of antioxidants in your blood. High levels of antioxidants in the blood are linked to a lower risk of disease. Studies show that honey has slightly less harmful effects on blood sugar levels and metabolism than regular sugar. But despite the fact that studies have shown honey to have some promising health benefits, it still contains fructose, which can contribute to a slew of health problems.

· Molasses – is a sweet brown liquid with a thick consistency. It comes from sugar cane or sugar beet juice. It provides several vitamins and minerals, as well as antioxidants. Molasses is also high in potassium and calcium, which benefit bone and heart health. It may help regulate blood sugar levels, but it is still high in sugar content and should still be consumed sparingly.
