Connecting Obesity to Covid-19

And The Presence of richberry to Help Aid Obesity

Obesity isn't just a cosmetic concern. It has already become a global issue. I remember back in 2001, obesity was a major public health and economic problem of global significance. Prevalence rates are increasing in all parts of the world, both in affluent Western countries and in poorer nations. Men, women and children are affected. Just like Covid-19, it chooses no age.

By definition, obesity is a complex disease involving an excessive amount of body fat. It is a medical problem that increases your risk of other diseases and health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and certain cancers. The fundamental cause of obesity is an energy imbalance between calories consumed and calories expended. Which means an increased intake of energy-dense foods that are high in fat and sugar, are supposedly burned but failed to be used as strength so we can build muscles instead of fats.

As explained by the www.medicalxpress.com, after becoming infected with coronavirus, an obese person's body may activate the large fat-dwelling reservoir of immune cells. People with obesity are commonly shown to have an unbalanced or inflamed immune system. Their blood often has higher levels of several inflammatory signals which are similar to COVID-19 responses in the body. This may mean their immune systems are more likely to overreact to a coronavirus infection.

Also, as reported in www.worldobesity.org, there was a big possibility that obesity will worsen the effect of life threatening Covid19. Why? Because persons with obesity who become ill and require intensive care present challenges in patient management as it is more difficult to intubate patients with obesity, it can be more challenging to obtain diagnostic imaging (as there are weight limits on imaging machines), patients are more difficult to position and transport by nursing staff and, like pregnant patients in ICUs, they may not do well when prone.

Special beds and positioning/transport equipment are available in specialized surgery units, but may not be widely available elsewhere in hospitals and certainly not in all countries. In general health systems are already not well set up to manage patients with obesity (as reported by MAPPS study published in Clinical Obesity) and the current crisis will expose their limitations even more.

Also in www.weforum.org, it was published that there are several reasons why patients with obesity admitted to intensive care with COVID-19 may require invasive ventilation.

Higher levels of fat in the chest and belly put pressure on the lungs, making it difficult for people with obesity to fill them to capacity under normal circumstances. This reduced breathing capacity may add to respiratory distress in patients with COVID-19. Carrying extra weight also means there is higher oxygen demand. Some patients with obesity might breathe too shallowly or too slowly to provide enough oxygen to the body, and some may intermittently cease breathing altogether.

Furthermore, In its July 25, 2020 report, BBC Health News published, Coronavirus: Obesity increases risks from Covid-19, experts say. Report says that being obese or overweight puts you at greater risk of serious illness or death from Covid-19, experts say after examining existing studies. The review of evidence by Public Health England found excess weight put people at greater risk of needing hospital admission or intensive care. And the risk grew substantially as weight increased. The release comes ahead of an expected government announcement of new measures to curb obesity. Dr Alison Tedstone, chief nutritionist at Public Health England, said the current evidence was clear, that being overweight or obese puts you at greater risk of serious illness or death from Covid-19, as well as from many other life-threatening diseases. "Losing weight can bring huge benefits for health - and may also help protect against the health risks of Covid-19," she said. "The case for action on obesity has never been stronger."

The above mentioned situations concerning people with obesity, are just a few of the unending lists of the most difficult cases to handle during this pandemic period. As experts prove how the situation worsens the covid-19 victim to struggle further compared to victims of normal weight, it is undeniable obesity is indeed a global health problem which needs to be paid attention to.

What are the possible solutions?

As mentioned in one articles of www.worldobesity.org, the current crisis and the need for self-isolation is prompting many to rely on processed food with longer shelf life (instead of fresh produce) and canned food (with higher quantities of sodium), we might see an increase in weight if the situation persists for a longer period of time.

Eating. The number one most common thing most people around the world right now, are more busy doing. Sitting on a couch consistently watching tv, reading, chatting with family members, listening to music etc. These activities keep us more busy, thinking what else are we going to do and get busy with, which often ends with what to feed ourselves more so not to get bored?

This will absolutely make people gain more weight, thus the possibility of increasing the number of people reaching the obesity line is visibly uncontrollable.

While we have been kept reminded of the SOPs and Safety measures which are common sense based, like keeping ourselves clean at all times to avoid the virus, obesity is just but another issue.

Experts advise getting engaged with daily exercise such as walking and biking for people with obesity, most especially. Also the avoidance of eating sodas and junk foods. These are just basic but usually these are the same advice which are hard to get done, given we are mostly on lockdown where lesser movements can never be avoided. Staying at home has contributed so much about gaining more weight. A lot of people got engaged in being lazy and not moving at all.
