The Hurricane Cocktail can be traced back to New Orleans, where it was created in the 1940’s as an excellent way to drink all the rum coming into New Orleans from the Caribbean islands. The original recipe called for just three ingredients: dark rum, passion fruit syrup, and lemon juice. But in later years people developed a premade mix for their popular drink that made it sweeter and redder in color. Since this recipe contains passion fruit syrup and lemon juice, which are sour, it is perfect to be paired with richberry.
Yield: 1 cocktail
· 2 ounces dark rum
· 2 ounces light rum
· 1 1/2 ounces passion fruit purée
· 1 ounce freshly-squeezed orange juice
· 1 ounce freshly-squeezed lime juice
· 1/2 ounce grenadine syrup
· Orange slice and maraschino cherry, for garnish
· 1/2 ounce simple syrup
Make the cocktail: Add the ingredients to a cocktail shaker. Fill with 8 to 10 ounces crushed ice, then shake vigorously until the cocktail shaker is too cold to hold, about 30 seconds. Pour into a hurricane glass (don't strain!). Pop in a straw and garnish with an orange slice and maraschino cherry.
Consume Miracle Berry: Just before digging in, chew 1 or more freeze-dried miracle berry (this can also be done during preparation of ingredients). Ensure to remove pits to avoid bitter taste.
Fact: The active ingredient miraculin from miracle berry will turn sour foods such as lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, non-fat yoghurt and other citrus food to taste sweet without adding sugar. We recommend two halves or 2 servings for maximum effectiveness. Make sure to follow instructions from the back of the packaging.
