The Immune System and its Importance to Our Bodies

The immune system is a complex network of proteins and cells that act as a defense mechanism for the body against infection. It is made up of cells, microbes, and special organs. Its main parts are antibodies, white blood cells, the bone marrow, the lymphatic system, the complement system, the spleen, and the thymus. All these parts work together in attacking germs, protecting against disease, and in helping to recover injuries. It is like your body has its very own military whose sole duty is to protect against all that threatens its safety, be it foreign or domestic.


When the immune system is in great shape, we usually don’t notice it working round the clock to protect us. We only usually feel things when there’s something wrong, like when we feel feverish, which means there might already be infections and/or viruses attacking it. Without the immune system, those infections and viruses would have free reign and we’d constantly be falling ill. Our immune system can differentiate our body’s cells from an alien cell, which it then tries to destroy if it is potentially harmful. This works well most of the time, but sometimes, problems emerge when the immune system classifies our own cells as alien cells and attacks them.

Everyone needs a robust and properly functioning immune system to be able to go through each day without any health complications or hindrances especially when coming into contact with germs. Not having a healthy immunes system could lead to infectious diseases that could vary from being serious to even fatal. The body’s first layer of defense is its physical barriers, to which specialized cells will jump into action, should any viruses or bad bacteria manage to breakthrough. If viruses do manage to break through, the white blood cells in our bloodstream and in the key areas of our body will try to fight and destroy them.


There are innumerable ways to boost one’s immune system. One is something most of us have taken in our early years – vaccines. A vaccine introduces the body to an antigen that creates antibodies that will protect us from future attacks by a specific germ. Vaccination is the most effective way of avoiding infectious diseases. It is responsible for the global eradication of smallpox and the restriction of polio, measles, influenza, and tetanus from most of the world.


In the later years of life, there’s no single supplement that can automatically boost our immune system. What helps a great deal in improving our immunity for a lifetime is living a healthy lifestyle. It helps to exercise; even going for a walk every now and then may help. Eating a healthy diet is also helpful. Proper nutrition is essential for the immune system to work properly, especially when the diet is filled with antioxidant vitamins. We should also try to get the right amount of sleep because sleep helps reduce stress, which then stops cells from being weakened or harmed. It is also important to practice stress management; the more stress we’re under, the more prone we are to somehow weaken our immune system. We should also avoid the abuse of alcohol and drugs, but this is pretty much for obvious reasons. The last trick to boosting the immune system is to also make sure we are as mentally healthy as we are physical. Research shows that a healthy mind, with strong relationships, appears to be healthier than those who don’t have them.


In conclusion, we should never take our immune system for granted as it is an immensely significant part of us. We should follow the helpful tips that were mentioned in order to boost the immune system.
